Halloween safety tips
Do not mess with these pumpkins…

Halloween is a holiday that makes a lot of moms anxious: gobs of candy to check, gobs of candy ruining appetites, strangers interacting with your kids, and the possibility for teenage mischief-makers.

Don’t let yourself stress. Create a set of ground rules with your kids, using my top 10 as a starting place. Click “more” for my top 10 Halloween safety tips for adults and kiddos.

Here are my top 10 Halloween safety tips, for adults AND kids.

  1. Adults: go with your kids. Even if they’re old enough to complain about you accompanying them. You don’t have to hold their hands as they go door to door, but you can wait an an intersection as they trick or treat down the street.
  2. Kids: don’t go into a stranger’s house. It’s okay to say, “No thanks,” if you’re invited inside.
  3. Everyone: keep your cell phones charged and with you. It’s easy to get disoriented in the dark, but you also want to be able to contact someone if an accident or attack happens.
  4. Kids: Don’t approach a dark house, or a house without decorations. Those people are signaling that they would rather be left alone. They might get angry if you disturb them.
  5. Everyone: Wear costumes that will keep you warm. Don’t wear anything that is hard to move around in.
  6. Kids: Eat your candy only after you get home. Let your mom check it for anything questionable. It’ll make her feel better. 🙂
  7. Kids: If strangers or older kids approach you on the street and you feel uncomfortable, get to a safe person or safe place as quickly as you can. Don’t go anywhere with strangers.
  8. Adults: If you witness teenagers egging/TP-ing your house (or a neighbor’s house), call the cops. As much as it may anger you, don’t confront–there might be more of them than you, and they might be looking for the fight. Turning on outside lights will probably make them scatter, so don’t bother opening the door to yell.
  9. Adults: If you’re staying home to hand out candy, try not to be alone in your house. Give the door a quick check out the peephole before you open it. If you can’t avoid being by yourself, consider setting a bowl of candy on the porch with a note like, “Take One.”
  10. Teenagers: This should go without saying, but, don’t engage in trespassing or vandalism.
apples!
Mmmmm, fall. 🙂

Having a self-defense mindset is all about accounting for possibilities. So be observant, but allow yourself to relax and have fun as well!

Hope my Halloween safety tips will help you have a spooky good time!!
